Chapter 11
Quinn was bored out of his mind in the nursery. The wolf pups were cute—he’d always liked dogs—but he was restless. Ever since Nazar had dumped him off here, he’d been itching to leave. Sneak past Alek, explore the den, find Dima.
Alek wasn’t having it, though. All Quinn had to do was look at the door, and the wolf would release one of those low growls from the back of his throat—the kind Quinn barely heard, but felt along the ends of the hairs standing on his neck.
“All right, all right,” he muttered, and leaned back against the cold concrete wall. It wasn’t like he was going anywhere. The collar Dima had put around his neck was clipped to a leash, which had been tied to a huge eye bolt in the wall. That seemed like some serious overkill. The bolt was one of those big thick ones you could tether a ship to. Quinn may have been restless, but he wasn’t a goddamned aircraft carrier.
And he really needed to talk to Dima. Not to tell him about the Soviet Union breaking up—that had clearly been more than even Nazar could cope with—but to clear the air about the three of them. Obviously there were still some cultural differences keeping them from seeing eye to eye to eye, and if he could just sit them down and explain—
The door banged open.
Quinn jumped, smacking his shoulder on the eye bolt, but the pain barely registered as Dima strode in. He was in his human form, but still had a wolf-like way of carrying himself—his gait smooth and deliberate, his eyes intense and his lips tight as if they were just about to peel back across his teeth.
As always, his bad arm was tucked against his side, but… differently. Quinn couldn’t put his finger on exactly why, but something had changed.
Dima pointed at Quinn with his good hand. “I’ve come to take him.”
Alek grunted something, barely giving Dima or Quinn a second look.
Quinn was halfway to his feet when Dima grabbed the leash attached to the collar, and he jerked it roughly, half-dragging Quinn out into the corridor. Good thing Dima was in his human form—Quinn doubted he’d have been able to keep up with a bodark.
Dima didn’t make a sound as he led Quinn through the labyrinthine bunker. Other bodarks passed, and they either shot the two of them amused or puzzled looks, or deliberately took up the entire corridor so Dima had to step around them. More than one bumped into him hard enough to send him stumbling into a wall. When they hit him on his bad arm, he yelped and cursed.
But he didn’t stop. No matter how the other bodarks fucked with him, Dima just kept on walking, hauling Quinn with him, until they were deep in the bunker and halted at a massive metal door.
Dima shoved the door open with a swift kick, and it banged into the wall.
Quinn gulped. Shit. Really good thing Dima wasn’t in bodark form.
